| "I have been a Quantity Surveyor for 23 years, qualifying in 1980 and spending 8 years overseas. I started to use computers more and more as part of the QS function - preparing Bills of Quantity etc., and for early estimating using the ELSIE programme. It was then I was motivated to find out more about Information Technology (IT as it was beginning to be known) particularly with respect to construction. In 1995 after reading an advert in Building Magazine regarding the MSc in Information Technology in Property and Construction, I realised that with a formal qualification in IT, I could combine the best of both worlds (Quantity Surveying and IT) as an IT/Hybrid Manager. My present position acquired within two months of completing the five modules of lectures, assignments, projects and exams (full time education), has enabled me to do just that. I am now working as an IT Manager for a large international construction cost consultant, using my existing skills and new found skills in IT management, helping them gain competitive advantage through the implementation of a business developed strategic IT policy, that supports the business needs now and in the future." | ||||||||||||||

| I entered Academia in 1990,
hoping to 'break the mould' and encourage construction professionals to embrace the
use of new technology. It was evident however, that my skills did not fully embrace
the strategic, nor cultural aspects of Information Technology (IT) within the business
environment. I subsequently enrolled (as a guinea pig) on the part-time MSc IT course
at Salford in 1992. This course provided me with sufficient insight and knowledge
into such diverse areas as Expert Systems, data modelling and software selection
techniques, enabling me to 'tackle' with confidence new areas and opportunities.
Since graduating in 1994, this qualification has helped further my career,
and enabled me to undertake important research - ultimately leading to an award of PhD.
