The programme was established by a steering group consisting of representatives from the University and National industrial collaborators. The role of the group was to ensure that the curriculum development parallels progress in information technology and the construction industry generally, whilst providing live projects consisting of immediate and pressing industrial problems.
The objectives of the programme are to produce students who are able to:-
  • Set up a new IT strategy and critically analyse existing systems
  • Critically analyse soft/hardware performances
  • Identify potential applications for IT in property and construction
  • Structure and maintain IT management
  • Apply IT to their own disciplines
  • Adapt to future possibilities

It draws on the expertise of the staff and the various research groups which enabled the department to achieve the highest research grading 5 Star in the recent University Funding Council Research Assessment Exercise. This has mainly been accomplished through research leading to the creation, development and application of innovative information and management systems for property and construction. The department has obtained several million pounds worth of research projects since 1992, very often in collaboration with members of a group of around 150 clients, professional and contracting organisations.
